PAST EPISODES
Episode 52October 5th, 2008It's been a looong summer, but when cool autumn breezes kiss the cheeks of fresh freshwomen, you know it's time for some a cappella edification. Or, put another way, when your ass is back in class so are we. We've go a lot of pent up a cappella energy from this summer ready to be unleashed. The Fall '08 semester is now in session! "September" (Earth, Wind and Fire / Stanford Everyday People) "Take Me Home Tonight" (Eddie Money / U of I Xtension Chords) "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" (Stevie Wonder / UCB Golden Overtones) "December 1963 (Oh What A Night)" (The Nylons / USC SoCal VoCals) "Aankhon Mein Tu Hai" (Penn Masala)

Episode 51June 6th, 2008Finally, the fabled Rock Band / Guitar Hero III episode hits the Internets. Along for the ride is Mickey Rapkin, author of the just-released docu-book Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory.

"My Name Is Jonas" (Weezer / U. Illionois Xtenison chords)
"Miss Murder" (AFI / U Penn Off the Beat)
"All the Small Things" (Blink 182 / MIT Logs)
"Dani California" (Red Hot Chili Peppers / Colorado College The Back Row)

Episode 49May 3rd, 2008This is about as normal an Episode of Acappella U as you're likely to find - great music, listener mail, inane commentary, everything that makes the show great and turned Joey into a celebrity (yeah right), and not a drop more. Next week we'll be hanging out in NYC for Episode 5-oh and the ICCA Finals, but for now much on some Rambler Bits dipped in Cream of Testimony.

"Take On Me" (Ah-Ha / SOU Dulcet)*
"Brighter Than Sunshine" (Aqualung / U of R Midnight Ramblers)*
"How to Save a Life (The Fray / Midnight Ramblers)*

Episode 48April 21st, 2008Live from Costa Rica. . . . it's Acappella U! Even though Joey's traveling abroad we've got some brand new a cappella hotness for you - specifiacall a few tracks from the smokin' new release out of U Penn's Off the Beat!

"The Kill" (30 Seconds to Mars / Off the Beat)

Episode 47March 31st, 2008Wow. So this took a while, but FINALLY our On The Rocks premiere episode is finished! See, originally this was supposed to be OTR AND Divisi, but then the Divisi stuff wasn't finished yet and. . . well, you get the picture. The point is, Pete Hollens et. al. have put together a great CD. We plug in some Appalachian State a cappella to fill the gaping hole left by Divisi (is 'gaping hole' politically correct??) and talk about our new show, Acappella U HD.

Episode 46February 28th, 2008The votes are in and, well, you won't be rid of me so easily. Mwahahahaha! It turns out that many of you enjoy, and dare I say look forward to my episodily commentaries. But as usual, I am willing to bow to your wishes and give everybody everything they want. . . . sort of. Midwestern a cappella occupies the first two slots this week, again this is due to student (whining) suggestions. Oh, and FSU's All Night Yahtzee returns to the U, replete with ICCA Quarterfinals victory garb. Huzzah!

"Mama's Room" (Under the Influence of Giants / Wash U After Dark)
"Life Is A HIghway" (Rascal Flatts / Wisconsin Madison)
"Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk" (Rufus Waintright / All-Night Yahtzee)
"Such Great Heights" (the Postal Service / All-Night Yahtzee)
"Sun On Moon" (James Taylor / NYU NHarmonics)

Episode 45January 30th, 2008By (apparently) popular demand, we're trying out a new condensed (read: no talking) show format. The last few reviews on iTunes have been un-erringly critical of my yip-yapping, so we'll see how this goes over - after all, the audience is always right. Tell us what you think, and maybe shoot us a nice review over on iTunes - we need the love!

Blurry (Puddle of Mudd / Chordials)
Ghost (Indigo Girls / Yale Mixed Company)
Walk the Walk (Poe / Virginia Sil'hooettes)
God Is A DJ (Pink / Sil'hooettes)
24 (Jem / Maryland Faux Paz)

Episode 44January 22nd, 2008We know, it's actually been less than a month, buy if our new, er, supporters have their way we'll be delivering the goods a lot more often. Auditorily scope the new Oregon hotness, aka OSU Outspoken. Mix in some Cornell and you've got a hell of an a cappella cocktail, just remember to Sing Responsibly. OK that was lame, but it's like, 14 degrees out, and our brains are frozen.

"Jesus Walks" (Kanye West / OSU Outspoken)
"Photograph" (Nickelback / Cornell Chordials)
"Free Fallin'" (Tom Petty / Smith Smithereens)
"Eli the Barrow Boy" (The Decemberists / UMBC Mama's Boys)
"Float On" (Modest Mouse / OSU Outspoken)

Episode 43January 1st, 2008To quote Spamalot, we're not dead yet. Far from it. We just took a semester off to, um, backpack across Europe. Yeah. But now we're back and stylin' in our new studio, thanks to some venture capital moolah. We also dropped some serious coin stocking up on premium music for your listening pleasure. We're even hiring! So stop reading this and check out the goods. "Feelin' Good" (Michael Buble / UNC Clefhangers) "Part-Time Lover" (Stevie Wonder / MIT Logs) "Such Great Heights" (The Postal Service / MIT Logs) "Billie Jean" (Michael Jackson / Cal Poly Take It SLO) "I'm Just A Girl" (Gwen Stefani / NYU Mass Transit) "12 Days Of Christmas" (BYU Vocal Point)

Episode 42August 27th, 2007'Back to school, back to school, to prove to dad that I'm not a fool.' Ah, the end of summer begets a new school year bedecked with $140 backpacks, a cornucopia of halter tops, and 'great for dorm room' crap from Target. And who better to put teh dopest a cappella licks to your otherwise run-of-the-mill BTS experience than Acappella U?? That's what I thought. Oh, and please watch Flight of the Conhords as soon as humanly possible.

'Sexyback' (Justin Timberlake / Back Row)
'God Only Knows' (Beach Boys / Brown Derbies)
'Either Way' (Guster / L'Shir)
'Life' (Fleet Street Singers)

Episode 40June 23rd, 2007It's the big 4-0 for the big A-U, and you won't be dissapointed. Not that Joey ever leaves his audience dissapointed, especially the ladies;-) We're rolling out non-stop heavy hitters for the occasion, including the new Dear Abbeys, Beelzebubs, and Noteworthy. No, not that Noteworthy. The OTHER Noteworthy, who is still, um, Noteworthy.

"All Night Long" (Lionel Richie / Dear Abbeys)
"Linger" (Cranberries / Tufts Beelzebubs)

"City of Blinding Lights" (U2 / Beelzebubs)

Episode 39May 30th, 2007In true collegiate fashion, we're cramming to get that thesis done by the deadline. We haven't come up with a topic yet, and it's due Friday, but we're sure something will come to us if we just watch a little bit more of the History Channel. This go-round we bring you some quality, mid-major a cappella, music that DOSEN'T make you wonder if it is, indeed, actually made entirely by singers. This is the bread and butter of collegiate a cappella, the backbone if you will, the sort of salt-of-the-earth, middle-class a cappella that this university was built on. Well, not really, but that sounded good, right?

Right On (Hartford College L'Shir)
St. Theresa (Wisconsin Redefined)
Taken Up (St. Olaf Limestones)
Walk Away (Hartford College Vocal Explosion)
Someone to Fall Back On (USC Reverse Osmosis)
The Seed (3.) (Brown Jabberwocks)

Episode 37April 30th, 2007Hola, amigos!! What's that? You don't habla espanol? No problemo! I will translate. . . no, no, it's not cultural appreciation day here at Acappella University, nor is it Spanish 201. It's just my hangover from a week spent south of the border, down Mexico way. Hey - I bet I could write a song about that. I hope ya'll liked Matt Bolling as a substitute prof, 'cause you're going to get another healthy dose of him for EP. 38. Matt, a Va Tech alumni, will be playing some tracks next time from For Today We Are All Hokies: An A Cappella Tribute, which is a double CD fundraiser that's available on acatunes. We've gotten the message you've been sending us about playing better music, and we're responding with deadly force. We even brought in Russel Crowe to help. Oh, and we MAY be sojourning to NYC this weekend for the ICCA Finals. Oh, and the new Bubs CD comes out Saturday too. But I digress - the playlist, if you please. . . .

Episode 34March 30th, 2007Come in to find out what happened at the ICCA semis in San Franciscamo. And by semis we mean semi-finals, not semi-anything else. While BYU continues to conqor the known world of collegiate a cappella, we decide to take a couple of hits from the sunshine hooka (tobacco of course) with UCLAs Awaken A Cappella, because after, Life's a Beach, man. We're happy that the Spartans/Pan Greek Army eventually won the war, that the crew of Galactica got to hear some Hendrix and that those come in mesquite flavor now. What is mesquite?

In true FDR-esque fashion, I'm here to offer you a New Deal - I will do a show on an every other week or so basis, (old school!) and the gang from acaTunes will host a third - thereby delivering unto you the music you so desire for your hard-earned acaBuck, but preventing me from going nuts. December was a rough month for me, but we'll get everybody caught up on their classes by the end of January, and we won't be charging tuition for January either, since we sorta are a month behind. Episode 28November 27th, 2006So, to make a long story short, we had a blast at the Boston University Night of A Cappella - not just because we got to see a benefit concert featuring NINE groups, but because we realized that Boston is only 38 seconds away from Rochester. Oh, and we also got to see the longest beer pong table in New England. Check out some freshness from BU, for your a cappella edification.

Today, the doctoral thesis on the history of collegiate a cappella comes to its completion in truly entertaining fashion. On top of this class featuring some all time classics such as "Still Haven't Found..." by the Bubs and "Just A Girl" by the SoCal VoCals, this class also takes an interdisciplinary spin by including some Eco 112 lessons that are truly priceless. Confused? Excellent! Come on in, take a seat, and let the professor do the rest. ?Mad World? (Tears For Fears / Ithacappella) ?Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For? Music Videocast Episode 2October 21st, 2006Here's the first of two videocasts you'll be seeing from our trip to Ithaca College. We decided to do do music videos this month instead of one plus a masterclass because this concert had two groups at it. This first one features Ithacappella's guest group, the Tufts Amalgamates. The video featuring Ithacappella should be up by the 30th or so. Enjoy!

Episode 25October 11th, 2006What a weekend - Ithaca NY is one kuh-razy place, and the Acappella U team wound up passed out in a strange basement with strangers all around us, but we still managed to make it home in time to get this filthily good episode up on the internet-waves (that's actual physiks). We had a blast meeting the Amalgamates and Ithacappella, taping the concert, and throwing people out of the party house when she could house no more. All in all we learned three things - 1) That guy with the eyebrow ring is pretty sweet (at singing). So's the black guy. And the really skinny guy.* 2) Joey is a very streaky beer pong player 3) Rymachine needs to learn to keep his hands off the talent Oh, and 'Zombie' from Baggage Claim will be on BOCA 2007 - we're calling it. Here's the rep-uh-toire 'Island In the Sun' (Weezer/MIT Logs) 'Zombie' (Cranberries/Tufts Amalgamates) 'Pain' (Jimmy Eat World/Tufts Amalgamates) 'I Believe' (Unk./Ithacappella) 'Hard to Handle' (The Black Crowes/Ithacapella)

Episode 24October 3rd, 2006All right Class, this lesson is one for the History pages, quite literally! Chad Bergeron submits his doctoral thesis to Acappella U this week, which coincidentally focuses on the history of collegiate a cappella. On top of being filled to the brim with Joey's corny shtick and jokes (which closely resemble the atrocity in the opening sentence), this episode is full of some classic a cappella songs that will broaden your educational horizons here at the U. Standout groups such as the Stanford U Fleet Street singers provide some interesting and truly original arrangements that make for an entire lecture of collegiate a cappella history, coupled of course with a contemporary hit to satisfy all of our full time students who are not history majors. So come on in, fire up your laptop, and get ready for an exciting class...

"Greatest Hits of The 1590's" (Stanford U Fleet Street Singers)

"The Whiffenproof Song" (The Yale Whiffenproofs)

"I Get A Kick" (Cole Porter / Mount Holy Oak Victory Eights)

Episode 13April 17th, 2006Deke Sharon interview! Definitely the highlight of the show thus far, you are all in for a wonderful treat. Also, check out the Acapodcast! Please look at our forums at www.acappellau.com, there are some folks out there with questions I can't answer!

Episode 12March 20th, 2006Sorry this one's a little late. . . but you guys love me anyway, right? You're going to love the chapter markers for this one, as there is an unprecedented amount of me yip-yapping in this installment.

'Dirt Road' (Gabriel Mann / SoCal Vocals)
'Me and Julio' (Simon and Garfunkel / SUNY Binghamton Crosbys)

Episode 11March 2nd, 2006This episode is a double-header. I took the material I got from both the Rochester (Feb. 18th) and Cornell (Feb. 25th) ICCA shows and combined them into one extra-large helping of collegiate a cappella. The second show, as promised, features all Cornell music except for the 'Winners Circle.' Thanks to Hayley, the Midnight Ramblers, After 8, Sarah, Bryce, Steve, James C.C., The Diesel, Stevie J. and every one else who made these last couple of weeks possible.

The chapter markers now go right to the beginning and end of songs, too, so you can use them a little more liberally. Here's what we've got:

'Echo' (Cornell Chordials / Incubus)
'Human Nature' (Cornell Hangovers / Jacko)
'Silence' (Cornell Class Notes / Sarah MacLachlan)
'Major Tom / Space Oddity' (Tufts Beelzebubs / David Bowie & Peter Schilling)

Episode 10February 13th, 2006African a cappella! Beautiful women in my studio!! Check out our store at CafePress.com/acappellau and buy our stuff!!! You asked for hoodies, you got 'em, plus a whole lot more! Seriously, though, this is the second episode I've placed on the main feed as an AAC file with enhancements (chapters, etc.), and the second time I've posted the MP3 version of the show on my downloads page.

But seriously, you should just go to www.apple.com and download iTunes (for free) so you can convert the AAC's to MP'3s yourself(ves).

For Episode 10 we feed the beast with:
'Kyrie' (Mister Mister / Oregon On the Rocks)
'Zombie', 'Fields of Gold' (Cranberries / Sting / Navi Redd)
'Love You Madly', 'Still In Love' (Cake / Rochester Vocal Point)

Episode 6November 23rd, 2005This week, Acappella U come to you from the ICCA quarterfinals at Syracuse University, where the RPI Rusty Pipres and the SUNY Potsdam PointerCounts advanced to the semis in New York out of a field of six talented groups. This was a bit of a learning experience, particularly with the audio levels during interviews, so you may have to adjust your volume a bit. We'll be much better next time, though. Several of our Loyal Listeners found the booth and said hi, and we had a lot of new folks interested as well. I also got the chance to sit down and have a chat with Maxine Sharavsky, the ICCA NE region producer.

'Stacy's Mom' by Fountains of Wayne / SU Orange Appeal;
'Ga'agua' by Tufts Shir Appeal (two groups with Appeal in their name in a row ... wierd);
'If I Am' by U of R After Hours;
'Where Have You Been' by SUNY Potsdam Pointercounts

No show next week as I will be taking a vacation aboard a very large ocean liner which will hopefully dodge any and all hurricanes/tropical depressions/bad weather. Also mentioned Anna Callahan’s book, Anna’s Amazing A Cappella Advice.

Episode 3September 27th, 2005This week we’re featuring the University of Rochester Midnight Ramblers, we have them in studio and play a couple of their best. Also music from York University’s Wibijazz’n. and the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones. We’ve had a ton of listener feedback, keep it coming!

Episode 2September 20th, 2005Episode two, includes songs from the Virginia Gentlemen, U of Rochester Midnight Ramblers, the Tufts Amalgamates as well as a Mystery Track! Some listener mail and other fun stuff. Thanks to all my listners for your support!

Episode 1September 6th, 2005First episode!!! This will hopefully be a weekly podcast. I've arbitrarily decided that 20 downloads warrants me doing another episode after this, so listen, my people!!
